Stainless steels are a steel family containing a minimum of 11% chromium in their composition. The main factor enabling the high corrosion resistance of these steels is the existence of an adherent, intense, ductile, ultrathin, and transparent oxide layer. Stainless steels gain corrosion resistance through passive behavior in chemical reactions thanks to this ultrathin amorphous layer. This oxide layer is formed in the aerobic environments and regains its original property by self-repairing itself even if it wears down due to external effects such as cutting, abrasion, machining, etc.
Stainless steels are divided into 5 main groups:
- Ferritic - Austenitic (Duplex),
- Alloys enabling precipitation hardening.
The fact that stainless steel can be produced in various physical and chemical properties enables its usage in various areas today such as kitchenware and home appliances, the automotive industry, machine manufacturing, and the construction sector. The rational distribution of stainless-steel consumption in the world in 2002 on a sectoral basis is presented in the graph below.
